This problem has been reported by countless Playstation 3 users and unfortunately now I am among those countless people. The other day I had the unfortunate problem of having my PS3 freeze. I don't know why. It has not happened before. I was playing and it froze, I restarted and it froze, I restarted again and it froze and so on. It was very scary and quite discouraging after spending the whopping $600.00 on the 60GB system. I had it in the 'laying-down' position and I found that by standing it up I have not had the problem since. I am not entirely sure if it was the recent firmware update that fixed it or the standing up, but the other PS3'ers that I have spoken to with the same problem claim that the standing position has helped them also.
So, if you have the same problems with your system, consider the position that it is in before you go and beat it with a bat.
